Danish Architecture – Arne Jacobsen in Klampenborg

Experience Danish world-class architecture on this private guided walking tour along Strandvejen (the coastal road).

The Danish architect Arne Jacobsen is world-famous for the furniture and lifestyle products he designed, e.g. chairs as The Egg and The Ant. But most of all he himself appreciated his work as an architect.

On this guided walking tour the focus is on Arne Jacobsen’s architecture. During the walk you experience the massive and fine fingerprints that the Danish top architect put on a short distance of Strandvejen (the coastal road) in Klampenborg north of Copenhagen in the 1930s – 1960s.

When functionalism arrived in Denmark

It all started with Bellevue Beach Bath when young Jacobsen won an architecture competition. He created everything from changing rooms, ice cream stalls and tickets to the iconic lifeguard towers which are today still Bellevue Beach’s landmark. In the following years he designed the rest of The White City: The Bellevue Theater and Bellavista housing.

The White City was Jacobsen’s interpretation of functionalism, inspired by the Swiss-French architect Le Courbusier and the German Bauhaus school. And the houses showed a new way of designing in Danish architecture where many people were sceptical of functionalism.

The design studio where St. Catherine’s College was designed

Later on the townhouses Søholm were constructed and gave Arne Jacobsen his international breakthrough. Arne Jacobsen lived in Søholm for 20 years and he also had his design studio here. Famous buildings like St. Catherine’s College in Oxford and the Danish Centralbank were designed in that design studio.

While we walk through the Klampenborg neighbourhood and enjoy the view over the Øresund Sound you will also experience works by Arne Jacobsen like an indoor riding arena, a former diabetes sanatorium and the fine gas station near the old fishing village Skovshoved.

All the buildings that we see at this guided walking tour are protected.

If you wish so you can end this tour with having lunch or coffee at Skovshoved Harbour (not included).
