Green Copenhagen – City Walk in Sustainable Nordhavn District
Experience the transformation of a port area into an inner-city suburb on this guided city walk in Nordhavn, a new sustainable and energy-conscious district with creative architectural solutions.
The new district Nordhavn (The Northern Port) is one of the largest urban development projects in Northern Europe. In Nordhavn, Copenhagen’s old free port is being transformed into a sustainable and energy-conscious inner-city suburb. By 2060, Nordhavn will accommodate 40,000 new inhabitants and 40,000 working places – and all buildings must meet measurable sustainability requirements.
WHAT THE GUESTS SAY

Ekin, Germany. Guided company tour
A walk through the first stages of urban development project Nordhavn
The guided tour takes you through the first stages of the huge urban development project; Århusgadekvarteret, Sundmolen and Kronløbsøen. We start at Sundmolen, a pier where part of Nordhavn’s urban development takes place, including the refurbishment of 4 distinctive warehouses from the 1950s. We continue to the small man-made island, Kronløbsøen, which has been built up in a harbour bassin.

Next comes the neighborhood Århusgadekvarteret, the first almost finished neighborhood in Nordhavn. In 2015, the first residents moved in here, and now it’s a lively and livable part of the transformation of Copenhagen’s old free port. Århusgadekvarteret is an award-winner for its urban development, and the neighborhood has attracted considerable international attention from both professionals, journalists and tourists. This is where you find the cafés, restaurants and shops.
A guided tour through past, present and future in Nordhavn
During the guided tour your qualified guide will tell you stories about the past in the old port. It is an area with a long history, part of it connected to Denmark’s role as a maritime nation. But you will (of course) also hear about today’s Nordhavn and not least, the future in the new sustainable district.
WHAT THE GUESTS SAY
Thank you for the tour! We really enjoyed it and learned so much about Nordhavn.
Hermineke, Netherlands. Guided research tour for Municipality of Rotterdam
We look at creative, architectural solutions, both those where old free port buildings have been transformed and given new use, but still tell the story of the rustic port environment of the past. And brand new, alternative buildings, such as the first cinema in Denmark that is sustainability certified and is located in an award-winning aluminum building.
Visit Konditaget Lüders and enjoy the view of Nordhavn and Copenhagen
We also visit Konditaget Lüders (Lüders’ Exercise Roof). 24 meters (78 feet) above the ground at the roof of a multi-storey carpark is this huge recreational urban space with a great view of Nordhavn and the rest of Copenhagen. You can walk up or use the lift.
In addition, we look at how the water is always close and thought into the urban plan, both in the harbour, where you can have a dip at the urban beach, and in the brand-new canals. And how new urban spaces and green ‘lungs’ create oases for people in this densely built-up new district.
