Guided Tour of Kronborg Castle and Elsinore (by train)

Leave Copenhagen and travel north by train together with your local guide who will take you on a private tour of Kronborg Castle – aka Hamlet’s Castle – and the old and charming seaport town Elsinore (Helsingør in Danish).

It is only a 50 minutes train ride from Copenhagen to Elsinore/Helsingør, and it is the best way to travel if you care about sustainablity. The train ride north will take you through suburbs, forests and along the coast of The Øresund Sound while your qualified guide introduces you to it all.

Visit the impressive Renaissance castle Kronborg Castle on a private guided tour

The Sound between Denmark and Sweden is the entry to The Baltic Sea and therefore, it has always been important who controlled the waters – and who could collect customs duties. That is how it all started with the famous Kronborg Castle, which we will visit: Passing ships had to pay the Sound Dues here.

Kronborg Castle is visible as soon as we arrive in Elsinore. We will walk to the impressive Renaissance castle, built by the Danish King Frederiks 2 and made world-famous by William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Since year 2000 Kronborg Castle has been UNESCO World Heritage.

Your guide will take you on a private guided inside visit to Kronborg Castle, including the Royal Apartment, the grandiose Ballroom, and the adorable Castle Chapel, dating back to 1582. As we walk through the old castle, you will also hear the fascinating story of King Frederik 2 and his beloved and wise wife Sophie of Mecklenburg.

Explore the picturesque Elsinore/Helsingør

We will explore the picturesque town Elsinore with narrow, charming streets and a wide range of well-preserved renaissance houses. Strolling through the town, we will pass the Carmelite Monastery of Our Lady. It is one of the best-preserved monasteries in Northern Europe from the Middle Age, and if open, we will take a look inside.

For more than 100 years the seaport town was also home to one of Denmark’s big shipyards. Helsingør Shipyard closed in the 1980’s but some of it’s old buildings are refurbished and houses a cultural center and a maritime museum. In one of the factory halls there is a street food market – perhaps you want to grab a bite for lunch here before returning to Copenhagen by train?
