Guided Tour of the Old Fishing Village Skovshoved
There is so much more to Copenhagen than just the city centre. Go for a true alternative experience and explore the old and cozy fishing village Skovshoved on a private guided tour. The experience – that includes seeing the iconic white petrol station by architect Arne Jacobsen – awaits you only a short journey from Copenhagen.
Let’s explore the former fishing village of Skovshoved on the coast of The Øresund Sound. The cozy, old and uncrowded town has a history which dates at least 750 years back. For centuries, Skovshoved was a rather closed community, living from the fish that the fishermen caught and their wives sold at the fish market in Copenhagen.
Overall, fish and fishing were for centuries the most important thing for Skovshoved – so important that even the church’s weather vane is a fish. However, Skovshoved did not get a church – and a large school – until the early 1900s, when the small town grew bigger.
It happened because some of the summer guests from Copenhagen fell in love with the idyllic fishing village throughout the 1800s. They decided to move to Skovshoved, and villas sprang up around the small, old fishermen’s houses.

In 1895, Skovshoved’s old inn became a seaside hotel. The hotel is still there and is part of the story of the summer life of the past. From the time when people arrived by boat from Copenhagen, or in the new cars that created traffic chaos on the narrow streets in Skovshoved. Because of all those cars, Skovshoved even got a petrol station designed by the world-famous Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, the iconic white petrol station from 1937.
